To put it simply, Knoll Unmult allows you to make an alpha channel from any video shot with a black background and can generate alpha channels for flares rendered on black backdrops as well.

It is worth noting that this plug-in is designed for Adobe After Effects CS3, CS4 and CS5. It will not work with the latest versions of the animation and creative compositing application. Also, it appears to have been discontinued, so it is unlikely that a newer, compatible edition will be released.
